The Kosova Government, in its commitment to increasing the potential of renewable energy resources, has recently published the first auction for a solar energy project in Kosova.

The purpose of this auction is to invite bids from potential investors who are interested in constructing and operating a solar power plant. The planned solar power plant is expected to have a capacity of 100 MW and an estimated value of 75 million euros. This initiative represents a notable achievement in Kosovo’s efforts to transition to green energy and the Energy Strategy for 2022-2031.

The upcoming auction holds significant importance as it marks the first competitive procedure in the renewable energy sector in Kosova. The project will be developed in the Municipality of Rahovec, utilizing public land that will be leased out for a duration of 30 years. The Government of Kosova aims to award a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Market Operator through the contract. The selected bidder will have a time frame of two years to commission the solar power plant and bring it into commercial operation. Interested parties have the opportunity to submit their bids until August 15, 2023, at 14:00 (CET), while the bid opening date is set for August 18, 2023, at 14:00 (CET).

The Government of Kosova has placed a high priority on the advancement of solar and wind resources as part of its Energy Strategy for the period of 2022-2031, which was approved in March 2023. In accordance with this strategy, the Government aims for renewable energy sources to account for at least 35% of electricity consumption by the year 2031. This objective aligns with the Renewable Energy Directive established by the European Union, which sets guidelines for EU member states to achieve a target of 32% renewables by 2030.
